Building Climate Resilience Across Monterey Bay

The Monterey Bay Climate Adaptation Action Network (MBCAAN) is a network of partners across the Monterey Bay region taking collective action to prepare communities, ecosystems, and economies for the impacts of climate change.

Alongside Four Directions Indigenous Consulting, the Collaborative for Right Relations is ensuring Tribal Nations, organizations, and peoples in the Monterey Bay Area participate in climate adaptation planning, implementation, and governance.

Why this project matters

We recognize meaningfully engaging Indigenous communities from the onset is imperative to achieve a future of thriving lands, waters and communities. Tribes throughout the Monterey Bay Region have played an active and important role in caring for these lands and waters since time immemorial, and the principles of reciprocity and multi-generational responsibility for stewarding the land are foundational to establishing and maintaining a resilient Monterey Bay Region. 

The work

As part of this work, the Collaborative for Right Relations leads Walking the Path of Right Relations: Creating a Climate Resilient Monterey Bay, which supports 18 non-Tribal organizations in MBCAAN to: 

1. Deepen their understanding of the history and current dynamics that impact Tribes and ways in which participants and their organizations can harm or advance Tribal priorities for self-determination and Earth care,

2. Strengthen relationships across non-Tribal and Tribal leaders and organizations,

3. Design and adopt new practices for engaging and supporting Tribes,

4. Co-create new projects in collaboration with Tribes.

With this foundation, Walking the Path of Right Relations forms a bridge for Tribal and non-Tribal groups to explore and initiate partnerships around climate resilience in ways that build capacity for these groups to work together in meaningful and impactful ways.
